Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
